Former Human Rights Commission Commissioner Dr. Prathibha Mahanamahewa said that regardless of whether an Inspector General of Police is appointed or not, election related activities can be carried out without hindrance under a Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) who will be appointed in connection election affairs. He said that the important thing for the country at this moment is to hold the election and not the tug-of-war regarding the post of Inspector General of Police.
Dr. Mahanamahewa mentioned this while speaking at a conference organized by the Kandy District Office of the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission to celebrate the Day of Protection of Victims at the Kandy Police Headquarters Auditorium. He emphasized that there has been certain controversy in the country regarding the non-appointment of the Inspector General of Police so far and nine petitions related to basic human rights have been filed against the former Inspector General of Police.
According to the interim injunction order given by the Supreme Court, pending the judgement of the case, the Inspector General of Police has been temporarily removed from serving as Inspector General of Police until the relevant trial is completed and the Supreme Court has given an order to appoint someone else to look after the office of Inspector General and act as IGP until then. He also stated that there is a problem regarding whether new appointments can be made with the extraordinary gazette that was issued, declaring the Presidential Election.
