President Ranil Wickremesinghe issued an extraordinary gazette, naming electricity, petroleum and hospitals as essential services.These essential services are required or to be performed in connection with the supply or distribution of electricity, petroleum products and fuel, maintenance, reception, care, feeding and treatment of patients in hospitals, nursing homes, dispensaries and other similar institutions.
These services provided by a public corporation, a government department, a Local Government body or a cooperative society have been declared as essential services under the Essential Public Services Act.
