The National System Operator (NSO) has launched an internal investigation into the recent nationwide power failure to determine the exact cause and sequence of events that led to the collapse of Sri Lanka’s electricity system.
According to the NSO, the system collapse followed the sudden disconnection of a power plant unit, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Norochcholai Coal Power Plant remains temporarily disconnected from the national grid as part of safety procedures, resulting in a loss of 810 megawatts (MW) of generation capacity.
However, the NSO said favourable rainfall conditions have increased hydropower generation, while electricity demand has also declined relatively.
These conditions are expected to help manage the electricity supply despite the significant loss of generation capacity from Norochcholai.
The NSO assured that electricity supplies would be carefully managed over the coming days to minimise disruptions to consumers.
Sri Lanka experienced a nationwide power outage on October 17 following instability in the national electricity system.
The NSO subsequently carried out restoration operations, gradually reconnecting affected areas to the national grid. (Newswire)
