An elephant handler from the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was admitted to the Kegalle General Hospital yesterday (1) with minor injuries, after being attacked by the elephant Manika.
The incident occurred while the handler, on his day off, had visited the orphanage with his family on World Children’s Day to observe the elephants.
Manika, an elephant previously cared for by former LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, was transferred to Pinnawala after his death.
The handler was attacked while taking a photo with his family near Manika. Authorities reported that others, including Manika’s caretakers, intervened to rescue the injured handler, who was then taken to hospital for treatment.
