EU monitors alerted on NPP election law violations

Dhanuka Rananjaka Kahandagamage, the legal representative of the Sri Lanka Reforms Organization, has submitted a complaint to the European Union (EU) regarding the violation of election laws by the National People’s Power (NPP) political party led by Presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Presenting a special complaint to the European Union, Kahandagamage mentions that the Election Commission has not yet taken appropriate measures despite continuous complaints about these violations of the election laws.

Several cases of violation of election laws by the NPP political party led by presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake have been observed and reported.

The political meeting held at the Maharagama Youth Center on July 28, 2024 is an example. Bringing government nurses in their uniforms to a political meeting of the NPP is a violation of election laws. The related complaint has been filed on July 29, 2024.

Paffrel Sri Lanka has also responded that it would be more suitable if such people did not participate in their uniforms for the NPP meeting. But no significant action has been taken by the Election Commission and no warning has been given regarding these violations of election laws and political ethics.

EU’s oversight can play a crucial role in addressing these issues and ensuring fair elections, as well as upholding the law. As it appears that the fair and democratic electoral process in Sri Lanka may be at risk due to the existing problems and lack of proper regulatory implementation, Dhanuka Rananjaka Kahandagamage, legal representative of the Sri Lanka Reforms Organisation, has further emphasised in his complaint that the intervention of the European Union is necessary to ensure fair and democratic elections.
