Ex-Minister Yapa and Wife Arrested Over Misuse of Relief Funds

Former Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and his wife were arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and are set to be produced in court today (23).

The arrests were made yesterday afternoon (22), following an investigation into the alleged misappropriation of Rs. 61.46 million.

According to Police Media Spokesperson SSP Buddhika Manathunga, the funds—intended to provide relief to flood-displaced residents in Bingiriya and Narammala in 2014—were allegedly diverted to finance campaign activities for the 2015 Presidential Election.

The CID is continuing its investigation into the matter.
