The expert committee report detailing public views and proposals for the review of election laws has been officially submitted to the Parliamentary Select Committee tasked with examining laws dealing with elections, excluding those governing provincial council elections.
The report was handed over to the Chairman of the Select Committee Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Prof. Chandana Abayarathna by the expert committee appointed to review public submissions.
The expert committee was originally formed to conduct an in-depth review of 31 proposals submitted by members of the public, institutions and organizations, alongside reports from previous parliamentary select committees appointed to examine election related matters.
Commenting on the process, Minister Abayarathna noted that separate reports had been prepared and submitted regarding the various issues and themes raised by organizations and institutions.
He further stated that several registered political parties have also submitted their views and proposals. The Parliamentary Select Committee intends to review all submissions made by the public, institutions, organizations and political parties and present an interim report to Parliament within two months. He added that citizens and members of the public will still be given a further opportunity to submit amendments and new proposals even after the interim report is submitted.
Meanwhile, the committee decided to extend by an additional two weeks the deadline granted to registered political parties to submit their views and proposals on the review of these election related laws. (Newswire)
