Eye disease affects Kotahena school

Grade 6, 7 and 8 of Kotahena Madya Vidyalaya will be closed for four days after finding more than 40 students infected with an eye disease spreading rapidly among children.

Doctors point out that this disease spreads very easily, and if a patient shows symptoms, that patient should not be exposed to the outside.

Paediatric Ophthalmologist Dr.Hiranya Abeysekara said, “From the first day until five days after the child’s eyes become red, the probability of the child spreading the disease to another person increases, because this is caused by a virus. If the child has symptoms, keep the child at home for at least three days. Also, a mask should be worn. Although this usually subsides within seven days, this may affect the pupil of some children which may damage the vision. Therefore, if the symptoms persist for more than five days, you should see an phthalmologist,”he said.

The Kotahena Madya Vidyalaya Principal said that 40 students in Grade 6, 7 and 8 were found to be suffering from this disease. After calling the Health Officer’s office, the Health Officer was brought in for observation. Later, they came back to the school on Monday and when they observed, there were 35 patients that day. After concluding that there is a risk of spreading this disease, the provincial office gave a medical recommendation to close the 6th, 7th and 8th grades for four days. Also the risk of this infection is higher among young children than older children”.
