Falsely accused Police Constable reinstated

Sri Lanka Police apologised and re-instated a Police Constable who was arrested and suspended on false charges of possessing and transporting drugs.

Police Constable (83840) J.D.Sandun was arrested for possession and transportation of 85,010 milligrams of cannabis by the Anuradhapura Division’s anti-corruption division in 2021 and after that, he was interdicted. The Police Department apologized for framing false charges against Sandun and re-instated him with immediate effect.

This step has been taken on the orders of Inspector General Chandana Wickramaratne and PC Sandun has been attached to the Mihintale Police Station.Seven police officers, including the Officer-in-Charge of the Police Anti-Corruption Division of Anuradhapura, were accused of illegally arresting this police constable and filing a case before the Medawachchiya Magistrate’s Court. They were suspended earlier on the order of the Inspector General of Police.

The suspended police officers are Inspector R. M.G. Sanjeeva Anuradha Aluthgedara, Sergeants (7682) Bandara Balasuriya, (12406) Chaturanga Ratnayake, (53403) Manjula Pradeep Kumara and Constables (71531) M. Roshan Madhusankha and (68493) L.P.Sunanda Senaratne.

On January 18, 2021, these seven police officers arrested PC Sandun at Isinbessagala, Thanthirimale on false charges of possessing and transporting drugs. By the time the PC was attached to Thanthirimale police station. Later, a case was filed against him maliciously before the Medawachchiya Magistrate Court.

On behalf of the Inspector General Chandana Wickramaratne, Special Investigation Bureau Director, Senior Superintendent D.S.Wickramasinghe previously admitted this before Medawachchiya Magistrate Priyantha Halyala and apologised on behalf of the Inspector General and the Sri Lanka Police Department. Police promised that the officers including the OIC of the Anuradhapura division anti-corruption unit would be expelled from the police service and PC Sandun would be re-instated in the service.
