Cabinet Spokesman and Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana yesterday said the Cabinet of ministers decided to increase the amount of subsidy given for the purchase of fertilizer for paddy cultivation to Rs. 25,000 from the 2024 Maha Season. The Minister said that it was decided to remit the financial subsidy of Rs. 50,000 for two hectares to the farmers’ accounts.

The Minister stated this while addressing a media conference held at the Government Information Department to inform the decisions taken at this week’s Cabinet meeting.

The Minister further said that it was previously decided to increase the fertilizer subsidy from Rs.10,000 to Rs.15,000 from the next Maha Season. But considering a proposal forwarded by the Agriculture Minister to increase the amount to Rs. 30,000 as well as the current financial situation, the Cabinet of Ministers and President Ranil Wickremesinghe agreed to increase the subsidy amount to Rs.25,000 for the purchase of fertilizers, the Minister said.
