Financial statements of candidates made public

The Election Commission (EC) stated that the election income and expenditure statements of all candidates, political party secretaries, independent group leaders and National List candidates who contested the Parliamentary Election have been made public from yesterday (17).

Election Commission Chairman R. M. A. L. Rathnayake said that the relevant income and expenditure statements will be made public at all district secretariats and the EC office in Rajagiriya.

According to the Election Expenditure Regulation Act, the deadline to submit the income and expenditure statements by candidates for the Parliamentary Election ended at midnight on December 6. Only 7,412 out of 8,361 candidates have handed in their income and expenditure statements before the deadline expired.

The EC stated that out of the 690 candidates who contested from independent groups, only 493 have submitted their income and expenditure statements, while out of the 527 National List candidates, only 434 have handed in their statements.

EC Chairman Rathnayake said that legal action will be taken according to the Election Expenditure Regulation Act against all the candidates who failed to submit their income and expenditure statements before the deadline expired.
