Ella Divisional Secretary Indika Gayan Pathirana said that the fire that broke out on Ella Punchi Sripada Mountain had been spreading for three days as of yesterday and around 50 acres has been destroyed by the fire so far.
He said that with the prevailing extremely dry climate, someone had started the fire, and even now the fire is spreading further with the prevailing winds.
Army personnel, Ella Police, officers of Forest Conservation Department, Ella Provincial Secretariat, Disaster Management Unit and villagers joined forces to put out the fire, but the fire is still raging in some area, the Divisional Secretary said.
He said it is difficult to extinguish the fire in some areas due to the difficulty of reaching those places as the mountain slopes are too steep.
