The Central Fish Market (CFM) highlighted that the newly elected Government should introduce the QR system and grants the diesel and kerosene oil at an affordable price to fisher community to reduce the currently skyrocketed fish prices.
Speaking to the Daily News CFM Chairman Jayasiri Wickramarachchi said the consumers are aware that the prices of all kinds of fish have been increased in the open market due to the high cost of fuel.
“Therefore the best option to reduce the fish prices is to issue diesel and kerosene oil at an affordable price under the QR system,” he said.
The CFM further highlighted that majority countrywide fisher community cast their vote for the newly elected President with the hope of a relief to their industry.
He also said receiving fish stocks to the Peliyagoda main fish market has rapidly come down as regular fishermen have curtailed their daily activities owing to the high prices of fuel.
Wickramarachchi further requested the new Government to look into this matter in a positive manner considering the current high prices of all kind of fish in the market.Wickramarachchi also said if fishermen keep away from fishing, it will affect consumers, hoteliers and also local seafood exporters who bring colossal amount of foreign exchange to the country.
The CMF Chairman also paid attention towards the high prices of fishing gear. He said the prices of almost all fishing gear including fishing nets, electrical equipment that are used to trawlers and boats, fishing rods, fishing reels and fishing lines are currently sold at unbearable prices in the market.
“Although this matter was also brought to the notice of higher authorities nobody took any action to give a solution,” he added.
