Five arrested over unlawful gathering in Jaffna

Five individuals arrested for participating in an unlawful gathering outside Tissa Raja Maha Vihara in Thaiyiddy, Jaffna, were produced before the Malpitiya Magistrate’s Court and released on bail of Rs. 100,000 each.

According to the Police, the Mallakam Magistrate’s Court ordered that the suspects are due to reappear in court on 26 January 2026.

Police said the arrests were made after participants defied a court order prohibiting roadblocks, banners, unauthorized tents, and any demonstrations that obstructed the institution.

The planned demonstrations were over a land dispute involving the temple, they added.

Despite the directive, the group had engaged in disorderly conduct, road obstruction, and an illegal protest, prompting police action. Investigations into the incident are continuing. (Newswire)
