Five suspects were arrested by the Vavuniya Police on July 31, for an attack on a house where a birthday party was being held, in the Thonical area of Vavuniya.
The suspects allegedly broke into the house of a person named Suresh, where a birthday party was being held, in Thonical area of Vavuniya, on July 23, attacked members of the house with sharp weapons, causing serious injuries to them, and then set the house on fire.
A 21-year-old woman died instantly, and her partner died while receiving treatment at the Vavuniya General Hospital.
Nine more people, including five children were injured in the attack and admitted to Vavuniya General Hospital. Swords and some other sharp weapons were found with this group and the suspects told Police there were more weapons hidden in a lake.
Officers of Vavuniya Police and Vavuniya Division Criminal Investigation Division arrested the suspects and also took into custody three motorcycles said to have been used in the attack.
The suspects are residents of Vavuniya and were arrested from Madavaiththakulam, Pampemadu, Shivapuram and Nelukulam areas of Vavuniya.
They have been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
