Five killed in separate road accidents on Saturday

Five people were killed in a series of road accidents reported from several parts of the country yesterday (13), police said.

The accidents occurred in the Boralesgamuwa, Wellawa, Dankotuwa, Maduragoda and Kadawatha police areas.

In Boralesgamuwa, a motorcycle collided with a lorry near Pirivena Junction on the Colombo–Horana road when the lorry attempted to turn into a by-road. The rider, a 19-year-old from Moratuwa, died after being admitted to hospital.

In the Wellawa police area, a tipper truck veered off the Gonagama–Rangama road in the Rathmale area and overturned. The driver, a 50-year-old resident of Wariyapola, died after being admitted to hospital.

In Dankotuwa, an 18-year-old motorcyclist from Kochchikade was killed after his motorcycle collided with an oncoming lorry on the Dankotuwa–Pannala road.

Another motorcyclist, a 50-year-old from Maduragoda, died following a collision with a lorry while overtaking on the Matale–Kurunegala road in the Alwalapitiya area.

Meanwhile, near the Bandarawatta bridge on the Colombo–Kandy road, a motorcycle collided with a lorry turning into a by-road. A 52-year-old woman from Kadawatha, who was travelling as a pillion rider, died after being admitted to hospital.

Police are conducting further investigations.
