Five more second year students were arrested on Monday (10) by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with
the brutal attack on a group of first year students of Sabaragamuwa University due to their rejection of ragging.
Four students were arrested by the CID on March 28 in connection with this incident. The four were released on bail after being produced before the Balangoda Magistrate’s Court the next day. The CID states that the 05 students arrested this time are residents of Kanampella, Kalatuwawa, Ragama, Talgaswala and Giritale.
These students have been arrested for being members of an illegal assembly and trespassing into the Sabaragamuwa University hostel and assaulting and injuring new students. The attack took place on February 15. Nine students studying in the first year of the Faculty of Management were injured in this attack and admitted to the Balangoda Hospital. The attack was carried out by a group of second year students who broke into the hostel where the first-year students of the Faculty of Management were living, at around 10pm.
The injured students stated that they were beaten with sticks and hit by the second-year students. This attack has been caused by the fact that these freshmen did not obey the various rules imposed by the second-year students as a form of harassment to the freshmen, and they had not cut their hair short and rejected the harassment.
