The Indian Coast Guard has seized 526 kilograms of heroin and methamphetamine valued at more than ₹3,000 crore from an Iranian dhow in the Arabian Sea, while apprehending five Pakistani crew members onboard the vessel.
According to a statement issued by the Indian Coast Guard, the seizure was made during an intelligence-led joint operation conducted with the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and a central intelligence agency.
Indian Coast Guard units intercepted the suspicious Iranian dhow west of Lakshadweep after detecting and tracking the vessel.
The Coast Guard said sustained tracking and a “hot pursuit” culminated in the tactical boarding of the dhow, resulting in the seizure of the large consignment of narcotics.
Five Pakistani crew members onboard the vessel were apprehended during the operation.
The vessel and its crew have since been escorted to Mumbai for a multi-agency investigation and subsequent prosecution, according to the Coast Guard.
The Indian Coast Guard said it remains committed to securing India’s maritime borders, dismantling drug-smuggling networks and countering transnational organised crime. (Newswire)
