Sri Lanka’s first natural foot-washing waterway built at Kataragama Menik Ganga will be opened to the public in conjunction with the Esala festival of the historic Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Dewalaya on July 21 with the patronage of President Ranil Wickremesinghe. A cost of Rs.50 million was incurred for this project.
Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Dewalaya’s Basnayaka Nilame Dishan Gunasekara said that this waterway will become an interesting attraction for Sri Lankans as well as foreigners.
The visitors who come to the Kataragama Dewalaya enjoy strolling in the naturally flowing waters of the Manik Ganga, he added.
“Visitors to the Kataragama shrine, both local and foreign, ought to experience a spiritual awakening. By growing flowers and trees, I have improved not only the Kataragama temple, but also the entire city. All of this will benefit the people of Kataragama,” the Basnayaka Nilame said.
The creator of this waterway project is the current Basnayake Nilame and the labour support was provided by the Sri Lanka Air Force. The waterway was built near the Menik Gange No. 02 Bridge.
