Presidential candidate, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa stated that he will protect state workers from high taxes and ensure fair work compensation.
Addressing a public rally in Mullaithivu on Monday (2) and emphasized that a special programme will be implemented to improve the livelihoods of women-led households, as well as a training initiative to integrate the disabled community into the country’s economic development.
Premadasa further stated, “We will secure funding to complete housing projects started in the country and will revive the ‘Gam Udawa’ programme for landless and homeless individuals.
He criticised current President Ranil Wickremesinghe for presenting numerous plans without addressing the lack of development in Mullaitivu district and youth unemployment saying, “They haven’t built a single factory to address the employment problem of the youth in the country. They are only able to set factories on fire.”
Furthermore, Premadasa highlighted efforts to promote unity among different ethnic groups, improve the education system by transforming every school into a smart school, and modernise the agricultural and fishing sectors.” He claimed, “For the first time in the 76 years of political history, my opposition party has provided aid worth Rs. 1 billion through the ‘Sakwala’ and ‘Husma’ programmes.” Premadasa promised to create a new tax structure that offers concessions to public employees and the middle class, with tax rates ranging from 1% to 24%, instead of the current 6% to 36%.
Additionally, he expressed plans to address discrepancies in retired individuals’ salaries, offer a 15% saving interest rate to the elderly, and ensure pensions for all state employees recruited after 2015.
