Former FFSL President supports Youthful vision

Anura de Silva, the former President of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) and a supporter of the Dacshitha Sumathipala faction, convened a press conference at Colombo’s Nippon Hotel on the eve of a crucial secret ballot, scheduled for Friday, September 29, at Football House. The ballot aims to elect the President of the Executive Committee for a four-year term, operating under the purview of FIFA and AFC officials and guided by the Sports Ministry.

De Silva stated, “We are currently in a strong position. We have engaged with approximately 90 percent of the league’s voters, holding face-to-face discussions to convey our intentions and gather their feedback. We are confident in our election preparations, and once elected, we will set in motion a plan for the sport’s development.” De Silva, who has previously served as FFSL President twice, exuded confidence, saying, “We have established connections with 67 voting bases nationwide, and most leagues are supportive of our cause. They are eager for change and weary of a corrupt administration that lacks a clear vision. We believe we can secure between 38 to 40 votes out of the 67, comfortably surpassing the required minimum of 34 for victory.”

Regarding the Presidential candidate, Dacshitha Sumathipala, De Silva underscored his youth and innovative ideas, saying, “As a young man, he brings fresh perspectives and modern techniques to the table. He is passionate, an entrepreneur, and adept at managing his businesses. At the age of 36, we anticipate he can provide more effective administration than our predecessors. It’s time to entrust him with the leadership and observe his approach, rather than perpetuating the same corrupt practices of the past.”

Anura de Silva’s extensive experience includes serving as CEO of the federation before his initial two- year term as FFSL President from 2015 to 2017, followed by a four-year term from 2017 to 2021. He also boasts a notable background as the former captain of St. Benedict’s College football team and a member of the Sri Lanka national football team from 1983 to 1992, including captaining the Sri Lankan team in 1991.

At present, five members, including Presidential candidate Dacshitha Sumathipala, and four other members, have been disqualified by the Electoral Committee and the subsequent Appeal Committee, citing eligibility issues.

De Silva noted, “We have informed FIFA about our commitment to adhere to the current constitution, and FIFA has directed us to operate within its framework.”

“We anticipate a fair ruling from the Appeal Committee this time. In previous instances, we have not witnessed fairness from either committee. Therefore, in accordance with Sports Law and the Football Constitution, we have filed an appeal. It is a lawful process, and we are optimistic about a favorable outcome. We are not inclined to pursue legal action; currently, we have nine members remaining, and we are confident of securing victory,” asserted Executive Committee Member T. Suthakar.
