Former President Ranil will not enter House again – Ruwan

United National Party Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene yesterday said that former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided not to contest the next Parliamentary Election.

Speaking at a press conference held in Colombo yesterday, Wijewardene said the former President does not have any intention of becoming a Member of Parliament through the national list either. Wijewardene stated that the former President will offer essential guidance and leadership to the party in his capacity as the  leader of the UNP, and a former head of state.

“The former President has invited Samagi Jana Sandhanaya to contest the next parliamentary election collectively,”he said.

Wijewardene thanked all those who voted for UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe at the last Presidential election. Parliamentarian Dr.Rajitha Senaratne stated that the United National Party does not have a history of former Presidents serving as Members of Parliament.

Meanwhile, UNP Chairman  Vajira Abeywardena said that former President Ranil Wickremesinghe will definitely stand by the country when required. “Today also we call upon all parties to join for a broader alliance to contest the upcoming election,” he said.

He said that the majority of the people are of the view that the United National Party should reunite.“We are in the process of discussing with the opposition to have a broader alliance to contest the upcoming Parliamentary election,” he said.
