Forty-three NPP MPs will sit on Opposition side of House due to lack of space

Forty-three MPs of the ruling party would be allocated seats on the Opposition side of the House due to lack of space, Parliament Chief of Staff and Deputy Secretary General  Chaminda Kumara Kularatne said. The Chamber has seating capacity for 232 members – 116 on either side of the Speaker’s chair. However, 159 members from the National People’s Power (NPP) have been elected to the Tenth Parliament at the recent General Election.

The inaugural session of the Tenth Parliament will be held on November 21, at 10:00 am. Newly elected Members of Parliament have not been assigned specific seating arrangements on this day and they are allowed to sit in any seat of their choice.

After that, the MPs will be seated in a formal manner, Kularatne said.
