A group of four youths have been arrested by Police for attempting to illegally capture close-up photos of the tusker ‘Agbo’ using a drone camera.
The arrested suspects were identified as residents of Kumbukweva, Meethotamulla, Anuradhapura Kurundankulam and Gampaha. Agbo the elephant who was treated under the care of Wildlife Department surgeons for months for a critical gunshot injury on its front leg was later released to the jumbo’s regular habitat jungle and is currently frequenting the Tirappane area.
Police had arrived at the location where the group of youths was trying to take close-up pictures of Agbo using a drone camera, based on information that was received from the public and through the Sri Lanka Air Force Intelligence Division that a suspicious drone has been spotted in the Tirappane area.
Police investigations have revealed that the drone camera which was used by the group of suspects belongs to a person residing in the Ma-oya area. The group of suspects had not taken permission from the relevant authorities to capture photos using a drone camera.
