Four drugs developed by Colombo University released to the market

Four types of drugs discovered through scientific research by the Colombo University have been released into the market as commercial products. As a result of the scientific research and discoveries made by Prof. Sameera Samarakoon of the Institute of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IBMBB) of the University of Colombo led research team; several related products were thus released to the market.

The Colombo University has taken action to release four medicated products to the market, Vernolac, an experimentally proven nutritional drug to kill cancer cells, Satiny, a medicated hair tonic with the unique properties of hair growth by controlling premature hair fall, baldness due to genetic conditions, excellent ability to immediately relieve joint pain and aches faced by many, Ortho Shield, a coating produced using scientifically proven herbal ingredients, Bio Shape, a nutritional drug that controls obesity, removes excess fat, and helps in diet and maintaining body shape.

At a time when there are various opinions that scholars are leaving the country, the University of Colombo has successfully generated income by introducing the products discovered and improved through its scientific research to the market as commercial products, and for this purpose, a separate department has been set up for the coordination of commercial production institutions within the University.

In coordination with that, a ceremony was recently organised to present the royalties to the university for some medicines and cosmetics produced by the University of Colombo in the past, where Prof. Samira R. Samarakoon of the Institute of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IBMBB) and the research team led by him was awarded cash prizes for the scientific discoveries made through their research and several related products.

The nutritional medicine called Bio Shape, which controls obesity, removes extra fat, helps in diet and maintaining good body shape, is being jointly manufactured with Fadna Life Science Company, a subsidiary of the local company Fadna Group of Companies, and for this the payment of royalty for the patent rights to the University was also made here.

Fadna Company Chairman Chamendra Somatunga handed over the relevant amount to Colombo University Vice-Chancellor H. D.Karunaratne.

Among these products produced by the University of Colombo, there is a nutritional drug with the ability to kill cancer cells and it is also special that part of the income received by the University will be used for the cancer research fund established in the Institute of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of the Colombo University.
