Fourteen years’ RI for soliciting bribe for fake govt. job

An accused who was found guilty of soliciting and accepting a bribe from another person to provide a government job was yesterday sentenced to 14 years’ rigorous imprisonment by the Colombo High Court.

Furthermore, he was ordered to pay fines of Rs. 5,000 for each charge and other fines of Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 20,000 separately. Accordingly, in addition to the sentence, he was ordered to pay a total of Rs. 90,000 in fines.

Following a lengthy trial, Colombo High Court Judge Namal Balalle observed that the prosecution was able to prove the charges against the accused beyond reasonable doubt. Considering the evidence during the trial, the accused was found guilty of all four charges and he was sentenced to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment for each charge by the Colombo High Court. He was ordered to serve the sentences concurrently for charges one and three and charges two and four. Accordingly, he was sentenced to 14 years’ rigorous imprisonment by the Colombo High Court.

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruptions (CIABOC) had filed indictments against the accused under four counts for soliciting Rs. 50,000 from a person to provide a job in the Sri Lanka Railways Department and accepting Rs. 20,000 from it between April 10, 2017 and April 20, 2017. The prosecution had named nine witnesses as the prosecution witnesses, while nine items were named as production items in the case.
