Free baggage allowance up to 60 kg per passenger

The Government has decided to reduce the embarkation tax currently charged from passengers leaving Sri Lanka by vessels and ships to promote maritime passenger transport between Sri Lanka and India, Cabinet Spokesman Mass Media Minister Dr.Bandula Gunawardhana said.

The Cabinet of Ministers has granted its consent to the proposal forwarded by Ports, Shipping and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva to reduce the embarkation tax currently charged to passengers leaving Sri Lanka by passenger vessels and passenger ships to 5 USD and 20 USD respectively and grant free baggage allowance up to 60 kg to a passenger travelling by passenger vessels.

“It has been recognized that the promotion of maritime passenger transport between Sri Lanka and India has the potential to promote the tourism industry by providing increased access to tourists from both countries, and through improved connections, to encourage cooperation in the fields of cultural exchange, arts and sports. For that, it is essential to introduce a low-cost travel and transportation fee system,” government sources said.
