Officers from the Narcotics Control Unit (NCU) of Sri Lanka Customs intercepted a major consignment of illegal narcotics valued at over Rs. 67.53 million during a special operation conducted at the Central Mail Exchange in Colombo today (Oct. 19).
The seized contraband was discovered concealed within 11 suspicious international postal parcels dispatched from several countries, including Thailand, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Germany. Customs officers had identified and held the suspicious parcels over recent months while monitoring incoming foreign mail, waiting for the designated recipients to claim them. After no recipients arrived within the permitted timeframe, officials opened and inspected the packages in the presence of officers from the Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB).
A full inspection revealed over 3.1 kilograms of Kush cannabis valued at over Rs. 30.5 million imported from Thailand, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Officers also confiscated 2,395 grams of MDMA (Ecstasy) pills sent from Belgium, France, Canada, and Germany, alongside 33 grams of Mandy (powdered/crystal MDMA) sent from the Netherlands. The largest single haul was contained in a parcel from Belgium, which held 2,202 grams of MDMA pills estimated at Rs. 33.03 million. Following initial inspections at the Central Mail Exchange, Sri Lanka Customs handed the seized drug consignment over to the Police Narcotic Bureau for further legal action and investigations.
