Prime Minister and Education Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said in Parliament yesterday that plans are afoot to provide 700,000 students with gift vouchers to purchase school shoes.
She also stated that there are plans to provide shoes to all students in schools with less than 250 students.
The Prime Minister said this in response to a question raised by Badulla District MP Ravindra Bandara.
Recently the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal presented by the Prime Minister, in her capacity as Education Minister, to provide gift vouchers worth Rs. 3,000 to selected schoolchildren, student monks, and lay students of pirivenas and seela mathas to purchase shoes.
