Gazette issued to import private Motor Vehicles
An Extraordinary Gazette Notification has been issued lifting the temporary ban on the import of motor vehicles, electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles with effect from 01 February 2025.
The Gazette Notification issued by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in his capacity as Minister of Finance states that this ban will be lifted without prejudice to the validity of the Import and Export (Control) Regulations No. 01 of 2025 and any action taken thereunder.
The Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development has also imposed 09 conditions relating to the import of vehicles.
The Ministry of Finance states that these conditions are being imposed taking into account factors such as preserving foreign exchange reserves, discouraging the hoarding of vehicles by spending foreign exchange, and increasing state revenue.
It has also been announced that a total duty of 30% will be levied on the import of motor vehicles under the Customs Ordinance (Chapter 235), in addition to the current 20% duty and a 50% surcharge.
