Gnanasara Thera reportedly missing after SC annuls presidential pardon

Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero is reportedly missing after the Supreme Court annulled the presidential pardon granted to him in 2019.

The Sunday Island reports that prison officials visited the Thero’s temple in Nawala, Rajagiriya, to take steps to return him to prison to serve the remainder of his six-year sentence.

However, monks at the temple had reportedly informed prison officials that they were unaware of his whereabouts.

Gnanasara Thero now faces having to serve the majority of his original six-year prison sentence, as he had served only around nine months before former President Maithripala Sirisena granted him a presidential pardon in May 2019.

The development follows the Supreme Court ruling declaring the 2019 presidential pardon null and void.

The three-member Supreme Court bench held that the pardon was arbitrary and had violated the public trust and principles of natural justice.

Gnanasara Thero had been serving the six-year sentence for contempt of court when he received the presidential pardon in May 2019. (Newswire)
