Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, speaking at the opening of Homagama new Divisional Secretariat building yesterday, requested Government Officials to perform their duties to the public to the best of their ability, during their time in office.
“The development of the country is for everyone, regardless of political differences. Victory is for all” he added.
The Premier went on to say that to build a prosperous country for the future generation, it was important for all to promote the production economy.
The Prime Minister went on to say that the new building and its facilities should be used to provide a better service to the public in Homagama, which has the largest number of Grama Niladhari Divisions in the Colombo District.
Meanwhile, Minister of Transport, Highways and Mass Media, Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana speaking at the opening of Homagama new four-storey Divisional Secretariat building yesterday said, there is one civil servant for every 13 citizens of Sri Lanka.
This was opened by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena on the invitation of Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana.
The Minister further said that, “In order to fulfil the needs of the people of this country, the officers of the Divisional Secretariats (DS) have to do a lot of work. There are over 1.6 million government employees. The main responsibility of any government is to pay the salaries of all those public servants at the end of the month or their families will not be able to survive. Next, pensions should be paid to the retired senior citizens. Every government has to pay subsidies to the extremely poor people who are struggling with their lives in addition to the government employees salary, pension and other expenses.
These days, liquor licences are being issued in Homagama electorate without the approval of our DS, and amidst the protests of the Maha Sangha.
The DS and the zonal officers organised a large Poson zone recently. On both sides of the road where the lantern competition was held now several taverns are coming up. It should stop because Gamini Jayasuriya, grandson of Anagarika Dharmapala and a former Cabinet Minister who represented this area, did not give permission to open taverns in Homagama electorate. That is my stand as well. So I request the Excise Commissioner to immediately remove all these licenses from my electorate, as it is the request of the Maha Sangha as well.
Because we are building this constituency as a knowledge-centric city. I respectfully request from the President, Prime Minister and the Government to remove the liquor licences, as Chairman of the Homagama Development Committee”.
Members of Parliament P. Undugoda and Yadamini Gunawardena, Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration, Pradeep Yasaratne, Western Province Chief Secretary Dhammika Wijesinghe, Colombo District Secretary Susantha Ginige and Registrar General N.S. Wijesinghe were also present.
