Finance State Minister Shehan Semasinghe said that due to the Government being able to exceed the economic growth rate predicted by the International Monetary Fund, the Government has decided to increase the Cost of Living index to Rs. 25,000 by increasing the salary of Government employees by 24%.
He said this at a press conference held in Anuradhapura yesterday (14).
The Minister also said: “Based on the promise given by President Ranil Wickremesinghe to give the benefit of economic growth to the people, that benefit is being granted to everyone. Although the economic growth rate for the year 2024 was predicted by the International Monetary Fund as 2%, the Government was able to achieve an economic growth exceeding 5 percent in the first quarter itself.
Accordingly, in order to increase the salary of Government employees from next year, it has been included in the budget document.
The salary of the lowest-ranking public servant will be increased by over 24 percent. Accordingly, the current living expenses of around Rs. 17,000 they receive now, have been increased to Rs. 25,000. Overall, the salary of the lowest-ranking public servant will increase by Rs. 50,000.
The Government’s aim is to bring the State revenue to the limit of 15 percent by next year, while maintaining the primary account balance at two and three decimal places.
During the next five years, Sri Lanka will be transformed under Ranil Wickremesinghe’s rule into a country with an exemplary financial control and Government control that prevents bribery and corruption.
