Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), National Organizer Tissa Attanayaka expressed concern over the Government’s inability of reducing the high cost of living in the country. He said the majority especially 60 per cent of children face untold difficulties due to the high cost of essential food items, dry rations, vegetables and fish in the open market.
Addressing a press briefing in Colombo Attanayaka said that even the World Food Programme has alerted the Government about the poor economic situation and said the majority are suffering due the high cost of essential commodities.
He said the Government should take immediate measures to bring down the present high cost of living to overcome serious consequences in the near future.
He further said apart from the high cost of living, people face difficulties with the imposing of unbearable high taxes by the Government from their bank deposits and monthly salaries.
“As we know majority senior public and private sector employees after the retirement have deposited their money in banks for their future well-being and the Government has started imposing various taxes from that money,” he said.
He said due to this situation retired employees are also facing immense financial difficulties.
“Imposing taxes clearly reflects that the Government’s inability of developing the country’s agricultural and industrial sector,”he said.
He said although the Government has been in power for the last several months it is a pity to say they have not yet implemented export-oriented economy projects to earn foreign exchange and it is the main cause for the high cost of living in the country. He said the Government has no other option to earn money rather than imposing taxes on people.
Speaking on the postponed Local Government Election, Attanayaka said it is the duty of the Government to conduct the Local Government election. He said people are aware that the SJB has the ability to recommence needy development projects that have now been completely neglected by the Government.
