The newly appointed Deputy Minister of Industry and Industrial Development, Chathuranga Abeysinghe, announced upon taking office that the government aims to significantly boost Sri Lanka’s annual exports in both industry and services. The target is to increase revenues from the current figures of $12 billion (Industry) and $5 billion (Services) respectively to approximately $35 billion collectively by 2030. A former student of Nalanda College and a graduate of Sri Jayewardenepure University, Abeysinghe brings a wealth of experience in ICT and finance and is a member of CIMA.
Abeysinghe emphasized the crucial role of the industrial sector in stabilizing the nation’s economy. “For decades, the industry has been neglected, failing to yield the positive economic outcomes expected,” he remarked. “This neglect has caused substantial suffering across various industries.”
He added, “We have recognized these challenges and are developing timely interventions to address them. With these solutions, we expect the industrial sector to thrive, contributing to a robust GDP growth target of 6.5%.” (SS)
