The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a framework for allocating land to resettle families displaced by the impact of Cyclone “Ditwah,” particularly those whose homes were completely destroyed and those living in areas identified as being at high risk of landslides.
The government said resettlement efforts are currently underway.
As state-owned land alone is insufficient to meet the demand, the Cabinet approved a proposal presented by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation to utilize additional land through several mechanisms.
Under the approved framework, land previously granted to individuals under government land permits may be identified for resettlement purposes. In such cases, the permit holder will be compensated for the value of developments made on the land through the relevant Divisional Secretary, and the land may then be legally reallocated to another person within the same income category.
The Cabinet also approved a process for incorporating privately owned land donated to the government for resettlement. Such land will first be transferred to the state through a deed of gift under the State Lands Ordinance. Following this, donors will provide a declaration waiving compensation under the Land Acquisition Act No. 9 of 1950, enabling the government to register ownership and proceed with the resettlement process.
In cases where affected individuals have no suitable land of their own and cannot be accommodated under the above arrangements, the government will allocate plots of up to 10 perches from either state-owned land or land donated to the government. Ownership of such land will subsequently be granted under Section 2 of the State Lands Ordinance No. 8 of 1947.
The approved measures are intended to facilitate the timely resettlement of families affected by Cyclone “Ditwah” while addressing the limited availability of state land. (Newswire)
