Finance State Minister Dr. Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said the Government will make a concerted effort to pay half of the salary increase of Rs. 10,000 (Rs.5,000) to the Government employees and the increased amount of Rs.2,500 to the pensioners, proposed in the budget, from January itself.
The Minister of State stated that during a meeting the President made a strong request to provide this amount from January onwards itself and measures will be taken accordingly.
If the 5,000 rupees allowance is given to the Government servants from January, then 6,500 million rupees per month will be needed for that, and for the pensioners allowance and amount of 1,800 million will be needed, the Minister said.
However, Dr. Siyambalapitiya said that the Government has already paid close attention to the collection of tax arrears owed to institutions including the Customs, and said that he expects to manage the income and provide the salary and pension increases to the public sector from January itself.
