Govt to provide mid-day meals to 1.5 Mn, shoes to 800,000 school students

The Government has decided to provide mid-day meals to 1.5 million school students whilst school shoes to 800,000 students.

The Government has taken this step in accordance with a Cabinet proposal submitted by Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya as the Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Minister.

Accordingly, students in Grades 1 to 5 of Government schools, students in schools with less than 100 students, students studying in special education units and selected Pirivenas are scheduled to receive lunch. School shoes are to be provided to 650,000 students studying in 6,000 schools with less than 250 students, 140,000 students from estate schools that do not fall into that category, and 2,300 students with special needs. In addition, 30,000 lay and ordained students studying in Pirivenas are to be provided with gift vouchers to purchase shoes and suitable footwear.

According to the Education Ministry sources gift vouchers of Rs. 3,000 each will be provided.
