Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala says the government has decided to provide Rs. 500,000 per household to address housing damage caused by the disaster situation, without conducting individual damage assessments.
He made these remarks while speaking at an awareness programme on the “Praja Shakthi” initiative held at the Kobeigane Divisional Secretariat.
The Minister explained that initial financial assistance was provided even before formal circulars were issued, with the aim of supporting families whose houses were fully or partially damaged in the aftermath of the Ditwah cyclone.
He noted that carrying out detailed assessments for more than 120,000 partially damaged houses would take nearly a year, potentially delaying the provision of relief.
“Therefore, the government has decided to grant a fixed amount of Rs. 500,000 to each affected household, without assessment, to ensure timely assistance,” the Minister said.
However, he said that households wishing to undergo a formal damage assessment may opt out of the fixed payment, in which case compensation will be provided based on the assessed value of the damage.
“If the assessed value of damage amounts to Rs. 2.5 million or even Rs. 5 million, the government will provide the full assessed amount accordingly,” he added.
