The results of the 2024 Grade 5 Scholarship Examination were released online yesterday (23) with cutoff marks for each district. The Sri Lanka Department of Examinations has published the results on its official website and the candidates can access their results by visiting the website at doenets.lk. The Grade 5 Scholarship Examination was held on September 15, 2024, with a total of 323,879 candidates registered-244,092 for the Sinhala medium and 79,787 for the Tamil medium. Of these, 319,284 students sat for the exam. However, according to the Department of Examinations (DoE) reports, only 51,244 students were able to surpass the cutoff marks this year, while 268,040 students did not meet the required cutoff.

The Grade 5 Scholarship exam became controversial following reports that three questions from the first question paper had been leaked the night before the exam. Several teachers were accused, leading to protests by parents.

As a result, numerous complaints were lodged with the Education Ministry and the Examinations Department and the Supreme Court regarding the incident.

Subsequently, the Supreme Court ordered the Examinations Department to award free marks for the three leaked questions to all students, stating that failure to do so would constitute a violation of fundamental human rights. In response, the Examinations Department announced that they would comply with the order, re-evaluate the results, and release them within 40 days.
