Harsha questions SriLankan Airlines’ request for Rs. 100 bn in additional Govt funds

Opposition MP Harsha de Silva has criticised the Government’s management of SriLankan Airlines, claiming the loss-making national carrier is seeking a further Rs. 100 billion in State funds.

Speaking to a television channel, de Silva said SriLankan Airlines had requested an additional Rs. 100 billion from the Government despite continuing to operate at a loss.

He also raised concerns over the airline’s leadership, claiming it has been without a Chief Executive Officer for around one-and-a-half years and is currently operating without a chairman.

De Silva further alleged that questions had been raised over potential conflicts of interest involving a previous chairman appointed by the Government, and questioned the transparency of key appointments made to the airline.

The opposition MP said the public deserves answers on how SriLankan Airlines is being managed, arguing that the issues surrounding funding, governance and leadership require greater accountability. (Newswire)
