The Department of Meteorology has issued an amber advisory for heavy rain in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts, warning that rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely in some areas.
The advisory, issued at 6 a.m. on September 20, will remain valid until 6 a.m. on September 21.
According to the department, the prevailing active southwest monsoon is expected to bring showers or thundershowers at times to the affected areas.
Residents have been urged to remain prepared for heavy rainfall.
Meanwhile, rainfall recorded between 8:30 a.m. on September 19 and 6 a.m. on September 20 shows that Maliboda in the Kegalle district received 103.5 mm, the highest among the locations listed in the advisory.
Dellawa Tea Factory in Galle recorded 93.5 mm, followed by Gurudiyapotha Tea Factory in Galle with 87.5 mm and WKK Lanka Co. (Pvt) Ltd in Kalutara with 83 mm.
The department has advised residents in the affected areas to remain prepared as heavy rainfall continues. (Newswire)
