“The number of HIV infected victims has increased 300 fold (in 300 percent) by now when figures of AIDS positive victims in 2018 are compared. About 3,500 positive AIDS patients have already been identified countrywide. There may be about 5,000 more unidentified patients who have not reported to Government hospitals countrywide by now as they have not sought medical treatments from Government hospitals. These victims are roaming about freely spreading this fatal disease countrywide. These infected patients are suspected of living in and around tourist hotels and beaches.
“Colombo and Gampaha Districts have reported the highest number of positive AIDS patients during this year. Among them, the majority is found to be senior schoolchildren and undergraduates. About 800 new patients are added every year to the present team of AIDS victims and early steps have to be taken to control this unwholesome trend in the country by the health authorities,” said Kurunegala DMO Dr. S. M. A. Priyadharshana told the Daily News.
