Hotline to curb elephant deaths due to unauthorised electricity connections: CEB

The Ceylon Electricity Board said, so far in 2024, nearly 50 elephants have died due to unauthorised connection of the CEB’s electricity supply to fences or wires.

The CEB requested the public to inform them immediately via 0112 118 767 or Hotline 1987 regarding such unauthorised connection.

The CEB in a statement emphasised that the wild elephants, a symbol of our country’s biodiversity, are increasingly under threat of extinction due to human activities.

The CEB said it has already taken various measures regarding illegal connections and added it expects public support to protect the wild elephant resources.

The CEB invited the public to join efforts to protect the wild elephant resource, which has religious and cultural significance since ancient times, attracts and is loved by local and foreign tourists, and contributes to strengthening the economy of the country.
