Opposition MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake claimed in Parliament that the remanding of the owner of House of Fashions over an alleged Customs undervaluation case was politically motivated.
He alleged that businesses linked to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa were being targeted, while businesses close to leaders of the current Government were being given a free hand.
Questioning why action was being taken now if Customs undervaluation had been taking place for decades, the MP said authorities should not single out entrepreneurs in a manner that could damage businesses.
Dassanayake further claimed that political revenge continued to affect Sri Lanka’s business community, warning that selective enforcement could undermine investor confidence and discourage entrepreneurship.
The owner of House of Fashions was recently remanded in connection with an investigation into the alleged undervaluation of imported goods for Customs purposes. The matter is currently before the courts. (Newswire)
