Human Rights Commission Chairman Nimal Punchihewa said seven sub-committees will be established separately for seven specially identified areas among the subjects where their attention is focused on and it has been planned to make a strong intervention in their problems. He said seven sub-committees including fields of children, disabled communities, up country estate workers, violence and harassment, as well as socio economic matters and that a commissioner as well as a director will be appointed to be in charge of these. Punchihewa said this at a ceremony organised by the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission’s Kandy Regional Office at the Kandy Young Men’s Buddhists’ Association Hall yesterday (6), on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
The Commissioner said that 12 persons including five persons representing civil organisations will be appointed for each sub-committee as well as two individuals with specific knowledge of the relevant fields. He also mentioned that a meeting will be held once a month where discussions will be held on how to actively intervene regarding problems existing in the relevant field and recommendations should be submitted.
Commissioner Punchihewa who said that the number of cases of child abuse and violence and harassment against women is increasing and neither children nor certain teachers have any understanding on how to act during such an instance also emphasised that programmes to impart knowledge regarding human rights will be implemented in the future for students and teachers.
He also said that, among the schoolchildren, attention is being paid to conveying the message to the children of lower classes by imparting basic knowledge to senior students.
The Commissioner said that within this country women are subject to various types of violence and harassment and in several cases, it is possible to see human rights being violated. Central Province Governor Lalith U.Gamage and Human Rights Commission’s Kandy Office Co-ordinator Viranjan Sumanasekara also participated in this event.
