I ended my political journey with Sajith when he declined the Premiership – Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka

I have decided to discontinue my political journey with Sajith Premadasa, when he declined the responsibility of becoming the President after Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled, I felt that there was no way forward,” said Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka.

He commenced his election campaign on Saturday (17) in Gampaha, emphatically stating, “The people of this country yearned for real change and rejected everyone in Parliament. I hope this sentiment still holds in their minds”.

“When I supported ‘Aragalaya’, everyone asked me why I was affiliating with a Party and not remaining non-partisan. Today, I have responded to all those questions by participating in the election as an individual candidate and aligning with the people’s cause.”

I formerly held the position of Chairman in the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB). Many SJB members urged me to support the Leader unconditionally. SJB was established after breaking away from the United National Party, and we made significant sacrifices for the Party. I contested in the Gampaha District election and secured the top position.

“When Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled and the people of the country were left hopeless, Sajith Premadasa was offered the role of the President. However, he hesitated to take on the responsibility. Instead, he made excuses and suggested Dullas Alahapperuma’s name for the Presidency. This is when I decided to end my political journey with Premadasa.

“I had previously predicted that Gotabaya wouldn’t last more than two years as President, and I can confidently say the same for Sajith Premadasa”.
