Former President Maithripala Sirisena, MP, said that he resigned from the SLFP Chairman’s position because the ‘Horagolla Walauwe Punchi Nona’ had filed a lawsuit and obtained an injunction against him.
He was speaking at the Galle District SLFP Electoral Organisers’ meeting held at the auditorium of the Karandeniya Sakura Hotel.
Former President Sirisena said he had resigned and appointed Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, PC, as the Acting Chairman thinking about the well-being of the party.
“‘Horagolla Walauwe Punchi Nona’ has filed a lawsuit and obtained an injunction against me. I cannot work until the case is over. In the meantime, there are upcoming elections.
I don’t know which election will come first. I can’t work when there is an injunction order from the Court. If I had not resigned, our electoral organisers cannot contest the polls because the Election Commission will not accept their nominations due to the injunction order against me.
This is why I resigned and appointed Minister Dr. Rajapakshe. He was the most suitable person,” Sirisena said.
During the meeting, a group of party members engaged in a protest against Maithrilpala Sirisena, shouting slogans and holding placards.
