My biggest challenge is to carry the country forward from the point where President Mahinda Rajapaksa had halted development, said Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Presidential Candidate Namal Rajapaksa.
Addressing a SLPP rally in Puttalam, he further said, “In our motherland, which was built on a foundation of Buddhist culture, any future government we form will also be responsible for safeguarding other cultures. Future generations have a duty to foster a society that respects all cultures, where the village, temple, church, and kovil co-exist harmoniously. We will take every measure to protect our cultural heritage.”
He added, “We have always made decisions with the welfare of the people in mind. At one time, we decided to defeat LTTE terrorism so that future generations could live in freedom. We built roads, constructed canals and irrigation systems, and established schools in rural areas that are on par with those in Colombo. However, our people have been left stranded. My responsibility and challenge now are to figure out how to advance the country from the point where President Mahinda Rajapaksa left off in terms of development.”
He emphasised the importance of national unity, stating, “We believe in the unitary state of this country. We must give proper respect to the heroes who defended this nation. It was through their sacrifices that future generations can now breathe the air of freedom. If there is any political force that understands the pulse of the war hero, it is the SLPP, founded by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.”
