Minister Manusha intervenes, gets them released

The Kuwait Crime Department arrested 26 Sri Lankans during an event called “Sri Lankan Summer Night” organized by the JVP backed Ethara Api organization to collect funds which was held on Friday (2). However, with the intervention of the Sri Lanka Embassy in Kuwait, they have been able to release 24 while two still remain detained.

The arrests were made for holding the show without prior authorization from Kuwait authorities.

The arrested included the organizers of the show and musicians who were present. Labour and Foreign Employment Minister Manusha Nanayakkara responded to the incident through his X account saying” I have been notified that Kuwait has arrested 24 Sri Lankans, including organizers and musicians, who attended an event organized by JVP-led Ethara Api organization. I have contacted our embassy and they are working with Kuwaiti officials to secure their release as soon as possible”.

Later, the embassy intervened and visited the Kuwait Crime Department and pleaded with the authorities for pardon and as a result 24 of 26 Sri Lankans including the artistes were released on Saturday (3).

Two organisers have been further detained for investigation. Ministry sources said that the arrest was done for a few reasons including fundraising and holding an event without proper authorisation from the Kuwait government. Immediately following the incident, Minister Manusha Nanayakkara spoke to the Sri Lankan Embassy in Kuwait and asked to take necessary steps for the release of the arrested individuals.  Artistes including Samanali Fonseka, Indra Chapa, Upekha Nirmani, Appukutti Chandra Ratna Silva and Thiloma Amalanga were present at the event.
